Tether Silently Freezes Four THORChain Vaults, Then Quietly Unfreezes Them Three Hours Later
On October 9, Tether blacklisted four THORChain vault addresses on the Tron network, freezing about 1.45 million USDT. Roughly three hours later it lifted the freeze, with no explanation at any point.
Three key facts
Four vaults held 93% of the assets. According to Crypto Briefing, THORChain runs six vaults on Tron, and the four that were blacklisted held 93% of its Tron assets. The protocol had to pause Tron cross-chain swaps and liquidity-provider operations. The blacklist was lifted at 15:30 UTC the same day, balances came back intact, and no hacks or thefts were reported.
No warning beforehand. THORChain technical co-founder Chad Barraford said on X that the team had received no notice from Tether, and that he hoped it was an error or a misunderstanding. The report says Tether has not publicly explained the freeze or the reversal, and 19 other wallets remained blacklisted afterward.
Freezing is routine for Tether. The report says Tether has used its blacklist more than 11,000 times, immobilizing billions of dollars, usually targeting wallets tied to scams, hacks or sanctioned actors. THORChain had earlier decided not to block addresses linked to the $387.5 million Bitget hack, but the report stresses there is no established connection between the two. Around the same time, a company sued Tether, alleging it improperly froze $2.76 million.
WangDou's Take
A protocol built on "decentralized cross-chain" had its Tron leg snapped off by one company in a single afternoon — without so much as a phone call. It's like your bank locking your safe for three hours, quietly unlocking it, saying nothing, and you posting online that you hope it was a misunderstanding.
Eleven thousand freezes tells you the most-pressed button on the "decentralized dollar" is the freeze button. THORChain's entire protocol holds only about $47.9 million in liquidity. For Tether, freezing it is about as dramatic as flipping off a light switch.
