Google Unveils a Universal Gemini Work Agent With Its Own Inbox, and Claude Under the Hood
On October 8 at Gemini at Work 2026, Google launched a universal work agent: hand it an objective, and it plans the steps and does the work itself. In coworker mode, it even gets its own Gmail address, calendar and file storage.
Three key facts
Three roles in one window. According to Reworked, Google folded a chat assistant, an autonomous worker and a coding agent into a single Gemini. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian put it this way: work now starts in the prompt window. The agent runs in Google's cloud and works on the web, iOS, Android, desktop and the command line. It also works inside Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and Slack. Long jobs keep running after you close your laptop.
Agents get their own ID. In coworker mode, the agent has its own inbox, calendar and storage, and every action is logged under the agent's name, not an employee's. IT sets company rules once and they apply to every agent. Admins can set a hard spending cap per project; when it is hit, the agent stops until a human resumes it.
Not just Google's own models. Google says the agent is separate from the model underneath. Today it can use Google's models and Anthropic's Claude models, with more to come. Versions for financial services and legal are in preview, with government, healthcare and retail next. A Google spokesperson said Gemini Enterprise customers get it at no additional charge.

The line to savor is "also supports Claude." Google's flagship agent runs on a rival's brain — like a restaurant with a "secret family recipe" sign out front and the competitor's recipe taped to the kitchen wall.
As for giving AI its own inbox and calendar: congratulations, your company just hired the one coworker who never declines a meeting invite. The most honest feature is the spending cap — once the money runs out, it stops working. That's more discipline than plenty of human employees show.
