Finland Halts Two Google Data Center Sites After Forests Were Cleared Before Environmental Review
On October 7, Finnish regulators ordered work halted at Google's data center sites in Muhos and Kajaani until mandatory environmental impact assessments are completed.
Three key facts
The trees came down before the review. According to Euronews, Finland's Supervisory Agency (LVV) is investigating whether Tuike Finland, the company representing Google, cleared forest at both sites without the required assessment. Tommi Muilu, head of LVV's environment department, said trees were removed, topsoil stripped, roads and storage areas built, and ditches altered. Hanna Halmeenpää, chair of the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation, said more than 300 hectares were deforested.
Two deadlines. LVV gave Tuike until October 14 to explain how it will proceed, and until October 23 at the latest to suspend preparatory work that significantly alters the environment, or face possible enforcement proceedings. Environment and Climate Minister Sari Multala called it a serious matter, said all companies operating in Finland must comply with the law, and said Google's projects will likely be delayed.
Europe's biggest single bet, on pause. In September Google announced a 13 billion euro investment in Finnish digital infrastructure over two years, calling it its largest investment in Europe. A Google spokesperson said the company understands the concerns and has fallen short of its own high standards in this instance, pledged to follow the regulator's guidance, and announced a 130-hectare tree-planting plan at Muhos.
WangDou's Take
Clear 300-plus hectares of forest, build the roads, dig the ditches, and only when you get caught announce that you fell short of your own high standards. That is a renovation crew knocking out the load-bearing wall first and filing paperwork with the building manager afterward. More than 300 hectares cut, 130 promised back: a 60 percent discount, marketed as a green pledge. The Finns don't care how many billions you're bringing; they care whether you knocked first. When AI companies are so desperate for compute that they can't wait for an environmental review, it tells you they know one lost quarter could knock them out of the arms race.
