Paradigm-Backed Blast Shuts Its Chain: Locked Value Shrank From $2 Billion to $32 Million, and Running It Costs More Than It Earns
On October 2 the Ethereum layer-2 network Blast announced it is winding down. In its words, the ongoing costs of maintaining Blast exceed the revenue generated by the L2, and it sees no credible path to making the chain economically sustainable.
Three key facts
Blast launched in November 2023 on a $20 million round led by Paradigm and Standard Crypto, selling native yield: ETH and stablecoins deposited on the chain automatically earned staking and real-world-asset returns. Before mainnet went live in February 2024, total value locked had already passed $2 billion. Today it is $32 million.
The exit plan: about a week to process Lido assets, with withdrawals paused during that window; standard withdrawals through the Blast interface until October 26; after that, assets remain withdrawable but users must interact directly with Blast's bridge contracts on Ethereum mainnet. Once the Lido step is done, the withdrawal delay drops to 24 hours.
The BLAST token fell 17% on the day, leaving a market cap of roughly $23 million. Blast's statement: it launched with the goal of building a self-sustaining chain for users and developers, and unfortunately the economics of operating the chain no longer make sense.
WangDou's Take
From $2 billion to $32 million is a 98% haircut, and the bear market did not do it. The business model never existed. Blast's playbook was to dangle points before mainnet even launched so you would lock up ETH and wait for an airdrop. In plain language: collect the membership fees first, build the gym later. The gym got built, and it turned out every member had come for the free tote bag. Tote bags handed out, members gone. Paradigm itself wrote years ago that there were too many L2s. Now it has proven the point with its own money. The exit is the part that stings: leave by October 26, and after that please operate the mainnet contracts yourself. That is a hotel replacing checkout with climbing over the fence. Crypto calls it a decentralized guarantee. Ordinary users call it nobody is home.
