Per 9to5Google and The Decoder, starting September 4 Google is permanently replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones, and Android Auto when projected from a phone. The rollout is phased and expected to take several weeks to reach all devices — and once a device is switched over, users cannot go back to the old Assistant.
The replacement has clearly drawn boundaries: cars with Google built-in, Google TV devices, Google Home speakers, and smart displays are not in this wave, and Assistant will keep running on them for now. Google originally planned to finish the switch by late 2025, then pushed the timeline into 2026.
Gemini on Wear OS also brings capabilities the old command-driven Assistant could never deliver — live transcripts for spoken requests, and natural-language tools for building custom watch widgets.
