Google Turns Its Search Box Into a Travel Agent: AI Mode Now Books Hotels
The front door of your next trip may not be a travel app anymore — it may be a search box.

On August 27–28, Google rolled out a full travel stack inside AI Mode in Search. The headline move: US users can now complete a hotel booking entirely within an AI Mode conversation — describe the destination and preferences, review rooms with ratings, pick a room type, check the cancellation policy, and pay with Google Pay without ever leaving the interface. Ten hotel partners are onboard at launch, including Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Hilton, Marriott, IHG, Priceline, Trip.com, Wyndham, and Choice.
On the flight side, AI Mode now hooks into Google Flights' price tracking: say where and when, and it watches the fare and emails you when it moves, rolling out in over 180 countries and territories. A new miles-and-points view converts prices into loyalty currency, launching first with Alaska Airlines (including Hawaiian), American Airlines, Choice, Hilton, and Wyndham.
But note the boundary: hotels close the loop inside the chat; buying a flight still redirects you to the airline's site or a booking platform. Google finished the "stay" half this week — the "fly" half is still one step short.

What OTAs have been charging for fifteen years is really a "process tax": search, compare, book, pay — every step stuffed with ads and cross-sells. Google is now folding that entire process into one search box. Booking.com and Expedia are called partners, but what's actually being dismantled is their storefront: traffic no longer lands on your homepage, it lands inside Google's conversation. When the entrance belongs to someone else, you're not a partner — you're a supplier. The day an AI says in the chat "this one's rated poorly, want me to pick another," a decade of OTA ad spend washes down the drain. The life and death of a travel platform was never decided by its hotel inventory; it's decided by who owns the sentence "where do you want to go."
