Operator HDR Global Trading announced BitMEX will officially cease all crypto trading on September 23, 2026 at 04:00 UTC. New account registrations are permanently suspended immediately; from August 26 risk limits kick in, letting users only reduce or close positions, not open new ones; and on September 23 all remaining positions get force-closed. Users who fail to withdraw by the deadline will be charged a monthly fee of $50 or 1% annually on their remaining balance, whichever is higher.
Founded in 2014, BitMEX pioneered perpetual swaps and high-leverage Bitcoin trading, and at its peak basically defined how crypto derivatives worked. The official reason for the shutdown: a prolonged crypto bear market plus fierce competition from rivals like Binance and Hyperliquid. It also carries a string of regulatory skeletons — its founders pleaded guilty and paid fines for violating the U.S. Bank Secrecy Act.
