Nvidia Challenger SambaNova Pulls In Another $1B at $11B — JPMorgan Signs On as an Inference Customer
Barely five months after its last mega-round, the AI-inference chip company hauls in another $1 billion.
Three key facts
On July 8, SambaNova closed the first tranche of a Series F, raising $1 billion at an $11 billion post-money valuation, led by General Atlantic. The co-investor list is stacked: Seligman Ventures, T. Rowe Price, Capital Group, plus BlackRock-managed funds, Intel Capital, the Qatar Investment Authority, Vista Equity, Battery Ventures and others. The company says more investors will join a second close in the coming weeks.
What it sells is an Nvidia alternative. SambaNova builds AI inference chips, headlined by its SN40L and SN50 systems, and positions itself squarely as an Nvidia challenger. Earlier this year it unveiled the SN50, raised $350 million-plus, and struck a collaboration with Intel. The new money goes to expanding capacity and scaling deployments for enterprises, neo-clouds, and sovereign-AI customers.
The hardest endorsement comes from JPMorgan Chase. The bank picked SambaNova as an inference-infrastructure partner, running its SN40L and SN50 systems for secure, on-premises AI inference inside the bank. For a company challenging Nvidia, getting into a big bank's own server room says more than any valuation number.
WangDou's Take
An $11 billion valuation and two rounds in five months sounds like a party, but the substance lives in two words: inference and on-prem. Everyone fights over Nvidia's training cards while models are being trained — but once a model is done, it has to answer users all day, every day, and that part, inference, is bigger in volume and where the bills really pile up. SambaNova doesn't charge head-on at Nvidia's most lucrative training turf; it gnaws on inference instead, then plays the data-never-leaves-the-building card — catnip for a compliance-obsessed shop like JPMorgan. So this billion doesn't buy a faster chip; it buys the promise: I'll make your AI both cheap and leak-proof. As for the valuation, Nvidia alone is worth enough to buy hundreds of SambaNovas — every dollar the challengers raise is a bet that the inference pie grows too big for Nvidia to eat alone. Whether they win is anyone's guess, but at least someone's willing to pay so the world doesn't keep all its eggs in Nvidia's basket.
