Musk's Grok 4.5 Arrives: Built for Coding, Priced at 40 Cents on the Dollar
While rivals race to be the smartest, Musk just flipped the table — same job, 60% cheaper.
Three key facts
On July 8, Musk's xAI released Grok 4.5, its first model built specifically for coding and agentic work, opening to consumers on grok.com and the X app on July 9. Developers can call it through Grok Build, Cursor, and the xAI API. It runs on a 1.5-trillion-parameter foundation and was trained on real Cursor developer session data — learning from how programmers actually write code inside a live codebase, not just from benchmark drills.
Pricing is the weapon here: $2 per million input tokens and $6 output, over 60% cheaper than Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.5. It runs at about 80 tokens per second, and xAI claims twice the token efficiency of leading models. On the third-party Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, Grok 4.5 lands fourth — above every open-weight model and Google's entire Gemini lineup.
Europe is locked out for now. Because of regulatory constraints, Grok 4.5's products and API won't reach the EU until mid-July.
WangDou's Take
The point of Grok 4.5 isn't "smarter," it's "cheaper." It ranks fourth on the independent index — not first — which means on raw intelligence it still trails Opus and GPT. But Musk never intended to slug it out on that axis: he cut the price to 40 cents on the dollar, maxed out the speed, and aimed straight at a price war where enterprises foot the bill. Training on real Cursor sessions is a sly move — learn how developers actually work in a real repo, which beats acing benchmarks — but it also raises the question of whether Cursor is feeding a future rival. And Europe getting shut out yet again is by now a fixed pattern for Musk's launches: ship in the US first, deal with EU compliance later. For Anthropic and OpenAI, a fourth-place Grok isn't the scary part. The scary part is that a fourth-place score at 40 cents on the dollar forces everyone to recompute their margins.
