One Government Order, and Anthropic Pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 Overnight
On the evening of June 12, Anthropic received a US government export-control directive and, that same night, pulled its two most powerful models — Fable 5 and Mythos 5 — entirely offline.
Three key facts
The order was fast and blunt. Per Anthropic's own statement, the directive arrived at 5:21pm ET on June 12, requiring the company to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national. Because Anthropic cannot reliably separate foreign users from everyone else in real time, the practical result was a hard shutoff of both models for all users — its other Claude models are unaffected.
The trigger was an alleged jailbreak. The government believed someone had found a way to bypass Fable 5's guardrails, though the directive offered no specifics on the national-security concern. After reviewing the demonstrated technique, Anthropic said it surfaced only "a small number of previously known, minor vulnerabilities" — all "relatively simple," and ones other public models can find without any bypass.
Anthropic objects, but complies. The company says it has not even received a disclosure of a concerning non-universal jailbreak that led to a harmful result, and argues a narrow potential jailbreak shouldn't justify recalling a commercial model deployed to hundreds of millions of people. It is fully complying while pushing to restore access as soon as possible.

For two years Anthropic has marketed its models like nukes — safety reports, "catastrophe is around the corner," the danger dial cranked to max. Then the regulator took it literally and confiscated Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Now that it's the one cut off, the story flips to "just a few long-public bugs any model could dig up." Nuke or toy gun — pick one. Anthropic wrote the script, and Anthropic is the one fumbling the lines.
