Visa Plugs Its Network Into ChatGPT — AI Can Now Swipe Your Card

Visa plugged its entire card network into ChatGPT. On June 10, at the Visa Payments Forum in San Francisco, Visa and OpenAI announced a partnership: once you link a Visa card to ChatGPT, an AI agent can place the order and pay on your behalf at, in principle, any merchant that accepts Visa — more than 175 million merchant locations worldwide. Yesterday it recommended; today it checks out.
To keep machine-driven spending in check, Visa built a new toolkit. Alongside the deal it unveiled Agent Scoring, an Agentic Registry, and a Large Transaction Model — all meant to make agent-initiated transactions auditable, scorable, and routable through the existing card rails. Translation: Visa wants to issue an "ID card" to every AI that spends your money.
The demo is smooth; the liability is fuzzy. Visa chief product officer Jack Forestell demoed it himself: tell ChatGPT the budget is $150, and it finds the item, places the order, and pays — all on a single one-time authorization. Convenient, sure. But "who eats the cost when the AI buys the wrong thing, the pricey thing, or the same thing twice" went unmentioned onstage.

For decades the payments industry has had one core job: confirm that you are the one spending. Visa just tore that wall down and replaced it with "a machine you authorized is spending" — then shipped scoring, a registry, and a transaction model as garnish. It looks like a risk-control upgrade; it's really pre-laying a brand-new chain for passing the buck. Card drained by an AI? Visa says the agent scored fine, OpenAI says the user clicked authorize, and the user says they just wanted headphones. 175 million merchants sounds grand, but the thing that actually got "integrated" isn't the merchants — it's your credit line. Convenient enough that you never lift a finger usually means that when something breaks, you can't lift one in time either.
