OpenAI Buys Ona to Keep Codex Running for Days Without Dropping Out

The most awkward thing about AI writing code: partway through, the environment dies, the context is gone, and it has to start over. OpenAI just bought a company that treats exactly that.

Three key facts

OpenAI is acquiring cloud-execution platform Ona. On June 11, OpenAI announced it will acquire Ona — the company formerly known as Gitpod, a German cloud execution and orchestration startup. Ona provides secure, persistent environments where AI agents can reach the tools, systems, and context they need and keep making progress over time, instead of being chained to a single device or one active session.

The goal is to take Codex from "hours" to "days." With Ona, Codex can handle large codebase migrations, multi-system integrations, and test-suite generation across hundreds of files — work that previously had to restart and reload context every few hours. Ona's entire team joins OpenAI's Codex group once the deal closes, led by CEO and co-founder Johannes Landgraf.

Codex usage is surging. OpenAI disclosed that Codex now has more than 5 million weekly users, up 400% from earlier this year. Deal terms weren't disclosed, and the acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approval; until then the two remain independent.

The subtext of this deal is that OpenAI has finally admitted what engineers already knew: today's AI agents can't work independently for long — cut the power and they forget everything. So the real bottleneck was never how smart the model is; it was whether there's a sandbox that stays up long enough for it to finish the job. Ona used to be Gitpod, which spent years selling cloud dev environments to a lukewarm reception — slap the "agent runtime" label on it and it's snapped up overnight. Same tech, new narrative, instant turnaround. The 4x-users figure sounds impressive, but it doesn't say how many of those 5 million lean on Codex as their main tool versus how many tried it once and never came back. Buying the ability to "keep the AI from dropping out" is itself proof of how easily today's AI drops out.
